This is probably the hardest part of minimalism: to get rid of sentimental stuff and gifts. We all feel bad to throw away presents from loved ones. Those items are meaningful and we see in them good memories.
However, those memories don’t really need those items to be remembered. We are convinced that they will bring us more happiness, but, in reality, they don’t.
You are not your stuff. The memories are in you and not in your things. By letting go of them, you will feel so much lighter and free. You can always take photos and put them in cloud storage like Dropbox. The best part is that those things can be useful to someone else.
For gifts, it’s always better to tell people beforehand that you prefer to not receive presents (food or concert tickets could be nicer options).
Start simplifying your life.
